The journey to work.
All shots with Olympus OM2n
: Vivitar 28 - 200mm f3.5 : Agfa Vista
- My journey did not start well. Aware that street
cred is all I had purchased a new pair of shorts specifically
for cycling, it was very soon evident that I had committed
a fashion blunder. Standing in front of the mirror before leaving
home they had looked very dashing, even if I do say so myself.
Once cycling they flared alarmingly on whichever leg was applying
the downward thrust to the pedal. I felt like a mobile 'Spot the
Ball' competition. By the time I reached Sywell church I had improvised
a knock kneed style of cycling to counteract the problem which
would probably permanently affect the way I walk.
|
- The aerodrome at Sywell is, so I am told, a very
fine example of the Art Deco style of architecture..

- This is a couple of miles outside the town boundary
and for all intents and purposes is another planet. The sign proclaims
'Single Track Road' and every hundred yards or so there are passing
places. The road looks pretty flat in the picture but it is a
steep downhill and on the return journey resembles the north face
of the Eiger.
|
- I had not yet reached the halfway point but the
bench looked really inviting and the spot was made even better
by the sound of running water. Time for a can of soft drink. This
is the edge of Sywell Country Park which was a Victorian reservoir
and Arboretum. The stream was part of a network of channels and
pits that were once used for washing sheep before they were sheared.
|
- Many local people drive out to Sywell to take
the 2.5 mile walk around the reservoir. A fact that hasn't gone
unnoticed by those with other reasons for dropping by.
|
- I was a perfect day and I was taking way too
long getting to work. I had already spent too long over my drink
by the stream and I was to be delayed further when I got chatting
to the guy approaching with the dog. Sywell Country Park is a
wonderful facility and the only cost involved is 50p for an hours
parking or £1 for the whole day. Outside the park is a grass verge
and later in the day it will be used for parking by drivers who
have paid tens of thousands of pounds for their vehicle but wont
drive into the park because they have to pay £1 a day parking.
How does that work?

The journey home.
- The hedgerows this year seem to be particularly
fine. They look good and they smell good.
|
- This shot was taken just a few yards from the
previous one but it was more about taking a break than taking
a photograph :-)
|
- This is about three quarters of the way up the
'North Face of the Eiger' and I am totally gone. So far gone in
fact that I am in touch with a medium conducting a seance in Milton
Keynes. I wonder if the answer to my energy crisis could be .................
|
- Mushrooms !!! Maybe I could grind them up and
snort 'em. I visualise myself high on mushrooms overtaking a sports
car up the last hill into town. Screaming at the top of my voice
'Get out of my way. Sucker!!!' Well it was a nice diversion from
the reality of the shape I am in. Truth is, even though they look
like the edible variety I doubt that I could ever be sure enough
to actually eat one that didn't come from a supermarket
|
- The village of Ecton. I have just cycled past
the village pub which bears the name 'The Worlds End'. I made
one or two choice comments to myself as I read the sign but mindful
of the fact that I never know who may be reading this I will keep
them to myself. This was the last shot I took. Photography was
no longer my main concern. I was preoccupied with the following
thoughts:
-
- a) I still had a couple of miles or so to go
- b) fifty percent of it was up hill
- c) twenty five percent of it was uphill and cycling
knock kneed
