Popular R&B vocalists at the finish of the twentieth century included Prince, R. Kelly, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, and Mariah Carey. In the twenty first century, R&B has remained a preferred style becoming more pop-oriented and alternatively influenced with successful artists including Bruno Mars, SZA (singer), Daft Punk, Robin Thicke, The Weeknd, and Mark Ronson. The transition from nation blues to city blues that started in the Twenties was pushed by the successive waves of financial crisis and booms which led many rural blacks to move to city areas, in a motion known as the Great Migration. The long growth following World War II induced one other massive migration of the African-American inhabitants, the Second Great Migration, which was accompanied by a big improve of the actual income of the city blacks.
In the 70s, Philadelphia International (that includes The O’Jays, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, Jerry Bell, Archie Bell & The Drells and Billy Paul) and Hi Records (that includes Al Green, O. V. Wright and Ann Peebles) obtained R&B hits. In 1951, Little Richard Penniman started recording for RCA Records in the leap blues type of late 1940s stars Roy Brown and Billy Wright.
Early information from Ruth Brown and Ray Charles discovered success with African American audiences, eventually crossing over to white audiences within the 1960s.
