Before World War II, Tampa Red was generally known as “the Guitar Wizard”. In the 1920s, the blues turned a serious component of African American and American well-liked music, reaching white audiences through Handy’s arrangements and the traditional feminine blues performers. The blues evolved from informal performances in bars to entertainment in theaters. Blues performances had been organized by the Theater Owners Bookers Association in nightclubs such as the Cotton Club and juke joints such as the bars along Beale Street in Memphis.
