The Dutch first explored the (now) New York and Connecticut areas, and the English soon adopted. Puritan minister Thomas Hooker set off with a bunch of about one hundred folks from the Massachusetts Bay area and settled in what would turn out to be Hartford. As the Connecticut Colony advanced into a state, its residents themselves turned ready explorers.
They constructed boats and in 1645 sailed along the Sea of Okhotsk coast to the Ulya River and spent the next winter in the huts that had been constructed by Ivan Moskvitin six years earlier. In 1646 they returned to Yakutsk. Luis Váez de Torres, a Galician navigator working for the Spanish Crown, proved the existence of a passage south of New Guinea, now generally known as Torres Strait.
